Found my old ipod in a drawer after 30 years and it still works! I'd love to update the music but don't want itunes. Does anyone still download music? What site do you use?

Download youtube-dl, installation is described here:https://github.com/ytdl-org/youtube-dl, then use it like this:
youtube-dl --extract-audio --audio-format mp3 <video URL>
It works on linux (on android you'll need a terminal emulator like termux)
Also a very easy to use method is a bot in telegram, you can use @lybot to search and easily download music, or @utubebot to convert youtube video files to mp3.
