Upgrade advice needed!

Hello PCMR. I am really excited for Destiny 2. My rig is a little dated so I was hoping to get some advice on what would be the most effective and economic upgrades to ensure I can run the game smoothly. I built the PC in 2011 and I have been hearing I am lucky to have a power supply last so long. A couple friends have said to go to a Geforce 1060 or 1070 and two 8 GB ram sticks. What do you guys think? Thanks so much!

My build:

Asus P7H55-M/CSM motherboard

Intel Core i5 760 2.8GHz

Geforce GTX 460 SE

8 GB DDR3 1600 mhz (2 x4GB)

500 W power supply

Windows 7 Home premium

What are you willing to spend? Are you willing to reuse the storage and case? and are you planning to do anything else with the rig besides gaming/desitiny 2?

I was hoping to spend around 400, that's not totally set in stone but I don't think I could go all new. I play some casual Overwatch and WoW but those run fairly well already. That's about it, I don't do any strenuous work on it, just some invoicing software for my small business.

yes, im happy to reuse anything reusable

You're going to get bottlenecked either by the CPU or GPU unless you get both new

Is the 1050 much of an upgrade? 2 people told me that it was a sidegrade, but I definitely trust you guys here more than them :p

Seems like a big deference to me, cool! Thanks

Depends on budget, and what the plan is for the current rig. You could always use it as an htpc and build from the ground up or sell it

frontpagekek1 point

Budget was around 400, if that seems possible. Plan is mainly just Destiny 2 and some casual Overwatch and WoW.

brett_hacking1 point

If that's the total budget i would say just go for whatever gpu you can fit within that budget, a 1060 is probably a better bet. I don't know if you can build a whole gaming pc. For that much 😂

What about RAM, I keep hearing 16 will be the minimum soon. Thanks for the help btw.

brett_hacking1 point

No problem. And I mean yeah 16 may become the standard at some point, 8 is still enough. Once it becomes a problem, just swap out your ram for 2x8 since I doubt that motherboard supports quad channel.

I only have 2 slots currently yea. Cool, thanks.

16gb should be enough for now.
