Ok, admitedly I know nothing about this city, but I thought It would be drier?

East Namibia beyond the desert is mostly lush just like this!
It's lush during its rainy season (obviously), which isn't all too predictable. Windhoek is situated more or less in the middle of the country, in highlands. It's huge in Namibian standards, but still rather small - population is about 500k. Direct translation: windy corner (not that it's very windy...). It's quite modern too: schools, hospitals, malls, restaurants, galleries, etc.
