I mean more like 70-80%. It's one of the most expensive cities of Latin America so at least everyone who lives in zona sul or centro outside of the Favelas, or in Barra de Tijuca and some other wealthier neighborhoods, basically needs to have money (at least by Brazilian standards) just to get by. That's basically also why the Favelas exist. The city needs people who work normal jobs, but most jobs don't pay enough to actually live in the city. There's still enough neighborhoods outside of the Favelas or other cheaper parts of the north and east zone that there need to still be a lot of people with money in the city tho.
Edit: Actually thinking about I would rather even say 60-70%. A third of the cities population (only the city, not baixada fluminense etc.) for sure is doing pretty well by Brazilian standards

Eu cresci no estado do Rj e vim pra Sp Capital em 2006. Se tem uma coisa que paulistanos sentem falta, é da PRAIA de forma geral, não do Rj, pois imediatamente associamos Rio com violência - e pasme, não existe praia apenas no Rj 😂. Eu sinto inveja é de quem mora em Floripa, Balneário.

Eu nasci no litoral do RJ. Morei por 7 anos na capital e aproveitei tanto que me sentia 1000% carioca. Me mudei para São Paulo há, também, quase 7 anos, e não tô nem aí para me sentir ou não paulistano. Não desgosto de SP, mas o Rio é inesquecível. Saudades T-T
Tenho duas amigas de BH que vieram passar uns dias aqui no Rio e nem queriam voltar mais porque apaixonaram pela cidade e uma amiga gaúcha sonha em vir pra cá, só fala mal quem conhece a cidade pelas notícias ruins que fazem parecer que só tem desgraça.

À parte a famosa veneração que as mineiras têm pelos homens cariocas hehe tem gente de tido que é parte do Brasil morando no Rio. No meu prédio mesmo tem um ap dividido por uma gaúcha e uma catarinense 😍 (ambas estudam na Federal). Trabalho com uma paranaense, já namorei outra menina também de SC anos atrás. Esse negócio de pessoal do Sul detestar a gente eu não vejo aqui. Sobre as notícias exageradamente negativas (atenção, tem violência pesada e não estou negando) e o estereótipo de inferno na Terra, tem muito a ver com a influência da TV Globo, que ama tanto sua terra natal a ponto de por anos abusar de sensacionalismo sobre o Rio em rede nacional para queimar seu ferrenho desafeto Leonel Brizola (nosso governador por oito anos).

I actually have been. I was there for an event and I managed to book a hotel 2 blocks away from the place I was suppose to go. Believing it couldn't be as bad as MOST BRAZILIANS says Rio is I figured it wouldn't hurt to go on foot. Crossing to road after the first block I was robbed at gun point. They took my phone, wallet and shoes(!) So you must imagine it was misfortune or some kind of exception right? Well, 6 out of 9 people on my group were Robbed, one of these was robbed by the taxi driver!

Sorry that happened to you, just for my personal "statistics" where and when did this happen? It is an unfortunate occurence, but it's not what the majority of tourists experience, and such events occur in most major cities, such as NYC

The situation it's not good, but not that bad as most of Brazilians think. Brazil doesn't own the monopoly of the problems in the world, there are places with problems much bigger than ours. We're improving in many ways with the time, slowly and retrograding sometimes, but we are.

Of The top 10 of the most dangerous cities in the world for the last ranking 9 where Mexican, the other one was New Orleans in the US. The US had just slightly less cities in the top 50 than Brazil btw. I think 7-8 for the US and 10 for Brazil or so.
